San Francisco Ballet wanted to re-envision their brand creative to reflect new Artistic Director Tamara Rojo’s imagination, passion, and spirit. Michael was creative director and designer for the global brand refresh and the 23/24 repertory season. Their collaboration was the beginning of a new design approach based on simplicity, poetic inspiration, and flexibility for the future. Photography art direction: Tamara Rojo. Photographer: RJ Muna. Copywriter: Leslie Ylinen. Designer (brand guidelines): Livia Song.
The central thread throughout San Francisco Ballet’s 23/24 season is transcendence. Every performance, class, and event opens the door to a new world, familiar yet ethereal, electrifying and enchanting. Ballet offers an escape to a place more passionate, fascinating, and dramatic than the everyday world. Spirits, take flight.

Packaging design
Adero is a smart system of tags to keep track of your personal belongings. Michael designed the brand identity and packaging systems to launch the new company. Concepts focused on order, organization, chaos…and a typographic accent: the halo macron—your guardian angel of simplifying. The final identity (shown in the last four images) was inspired by Adero’s invisible technology layer as well as the form of the product. Packaging illustration by Giovanni Pintori for concept and direction. Product design by Fjord.
Kim and Proper is a line of dresses from founder and fashion designer Kim Bachman, made in California. Michael designed and directed the collection’s brand launch. Every detail in the work—from model selection to photography style to brand design—were created to reflect Kim’s vision for her dresses. Photography by David Martinez.

Wine Direct

Brand design
Bottle Theory was the first wine club launched by Wine Direct, bringing wind club subscribers quality wines crafted by small, unique wineries. This was in contrast to most wine clubs that repackage factory wines targeted to anyone and everyone.
The Bottle Theory identity reflects the spaciousness of the name, using a monogram that brings a modern and playful feeling to a dry and homogeneous marketplace.
